That's Sheridan Hill, one of our only hills in Pitt Meadows' valley!

Lafarge Canada's Pitt River Quarries, located in the Pitt Polder area of northern Pitt Meadows, has applied to the ministry of Energy and Mines to expand their mining of aggregate by 15.8 hectares (39.4 arces) on Sheridan Hill.  Thus bringing the final mine crest and new boundary within 15 meters of residential property boundaries (100 meters from the nearest homes) and south to the Menzies rd right of way which is currently undeveloped.

Based on the materials submitted , it is expected that the mining operation's greatest visual impact will be from the west side of Sheridan Hill and will be visible  from Harris, McNeil, Richardson road and all of the properties in that area.

Although this land is designated rural residential, a municipality cannot regulate mining operations as it can other uses.  Courts have determined that the extraction of rock is not considered a land use.  Therefore it cannot be regulated through the land use bylaw.  Generally, regulating mining activities falls under provincial regulation.

Pitt Meadows city council met on November 3, 2009 at city hall to vote on recommendations regarding this proposed quarry expansion.  Council voted unanimously that approval was not recommended.  Their concerns have been forwarded to the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

Please ask our mayor and council members to go to the provincial ministries involved and ask them to stop this expansion on behalf of the people of Pitt Meadows, those  from other communities across the lower mainland and those visiting from all over the world who enjoy this special area.
