Issues
Lafarge Canada has applied to the Ministry of Energy and Mines to expand their operation by 39.4 acres on Sheridan Hill in Pitt Meadows BC. Pitt Meadows city council voted at the meeting held on Oct 27th 2009 to "Not Recommend Approval" for the expansion. However, mining operations are regulated by the province, not the municipality. The expansion would allow the mine to come within 15 meters of the property boundaries and 100 meters of the nearest house on Sheridan Hill.

Truck leaving the quarry
The proposed expansion would be visible from Harris, McNeil and Richardson road, but could also been see as far away as Langley and Poco. The concerns are not just focused on the visual aspect. Drainage, flooding and run off from the quarry could pollute the Alouette River inevitably killing fish. Local animal families such as bear, deer, owls, eagles , and the 12 remaining pairs of sandhill cranes would also be displaced as the blasting moves closer and trees are removed. Increased dust, noise, and light pollution would disturb wildlife as well as residents, not to mention the damage dynamite blasting has done to houses and settling of land.

Gravel spill from trucks leaving quarry
Lafarge Canada plans tier a section of excavated land leaving it open for condensed development which has sparked the attention of the Pitt Polder Society. Formed in 1997, the Pitt Polder society was created to fight against the proposal for the Swan-E-Set townhouse development.
Many of the residents of Sheridan, Menzies, Richardson, McNeil and Harris road have owned their land since the dutch settlers built the dykes in the early 1900`s. The quarry has been operating since the 1960's and the proposed expansion would further excavation for 10-15 years.
Before dutch settlers the hill was home to some of the earlest first nations to the lower Fraser region. The Katzie people are direct descendants of these people and the hill has significance to their history and the creation of the surrounding area.
We only have one chance to save the hill for future generations to enjoy!
Enough is enough. People before profit.
